Everyone needs the internet. Every day it is getting more and more integrated into everyday life. Whether for business or leisure, it's a real pain not to have it when you need it. This article will cover the simple stuff you can do to fix a faulty internet connection without paying through the nose.
If you aren't on wireless, then you must make sure your internet cable (Also connected to your router) is plugged into the correct slot on your computer.
Plug it in, Plug it in. Electronics need power to work (believe it or not!).
Most modems will have a little light to tell you that you are actually connected to the internet. This needs to be on, or you are sadly not online.
For whatever reason, your area might just be down temporarily. If you call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) they will be able to tell you if there is a problem in your area. It works just like a regular power outage. You just got to wait it out and soon enough it should be back.
I don't know why this happens, but sometimes your computer will just lose its IP Address (Internet Protocol Address). It's infuriating because you can't access the internet without it. What you do then is just unplug your router and turn it off for a minute or two, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This will allow your computer to get a new IP address and give you back your internet. If your web access randomly just disappears, try this. I have to do this myself often enough to know that everyone should be aware of this fix.
Right click the Network icon by your system clock (you might have to click the arrow to show more icons) and go to "Diagnose and Repair". It looks like this in Vista:

Well those are the basic steps you can take to recover your internet without calling tech support or other money taking service. I wish you the best of luck with this one because I know how much it sucks to be without the internet, especially when you need it. Though chances are you haven't lost your internet yet or how could you be looking at this? So remember it well (or just print it off now)! You'll need it some time!
